National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems Advocates for Prevention, Treatment and Care

Oceans Healthcare, a behavioral health provider focused on the healing and long-term recovery of older adults and seniors, today announced it has joined the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems. The national advocacy group represents provider systems that are committed to delivery of responsive, accountable and clinically effective prevention, treatment and care for children, adolescents, adults and older adults with mental and substance abuse disorders.

“Oceans focuses largely on the treatment and long-term recovery of older adults and seniors, but like many of our fellow association members, we share the overall goal of improving access to mental health services,” said Oceans CEO Stuart Archer. “We recognize we can be most effective when we work together to improve attitudes toward behavioral health, increase the likelihood that someone will disclose a need and promote positive associations with seeking help.”

Collectively, association members are behavioral healthcare provider organizations that own or manage more than 800 specialty psychiatric hospitals, general hospital psychiatric and addiction treatment units and behavioral healthcare divisions, residential treatment facilities, youth services organizations and extensive outpatient networks throughout the U.S.

“Millions of Americans of all ages experience psychiatric and substance use disorders every year,” said NAPHS President and CEO Mark Covall. “The right treatment, in the right setting, at the right time makes a difference in their lives, in their families’ lives, and in their communities.  Since its founding in 1933, the association has worked with its member organizations – like Oceans Healthcare – to improve access and coverage for mental health and addiction treatment services and to ensure quality.  We look forward to having the resources of Oceans within our membership as we work with policymakers, regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies to develop sound behavioral health policies that will improve the lives of Americans who live with behavioral health disorders.”

In recent years, the association and its members played a critical leadership role in advocating for the federal mental health parity law (the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act) that requires health insurance plans that offer mental health and addiction coverage to provide that coverage on par with the financial and treatment limits for other physical illnesses.
